Why orientation is important for building

Before discussing the importance of orientation of building let's understand what orientation is?
orientation gives us information about the direction and position with respect to any point and space. In other words, we can say that it analyzes the relative position.

 

In the building, orientation plays an important role during the functional design. It tells us placing of building in such a way that it gets the maximum advantages of the natural source for maximum possible comfort.
Artificial things or devices can create comfortable conditions inside the building but the cost is a major consideration and these comforts keep us away from natural comfort. that's why we do not use natural resources in the correct way like
use of natural wind direction
use of solar energy
use of rainfall
We continuously use mechanical devices for comfort in building hence we have faced many problems like
Increase in temperature
Humidity
pollution
stress or tension
health
We can get rid of all these things in the building if we design the building in a proper orientation.
what measures should we take while designing the building?





Temperature:
All Building has a vertical surface and roof that is continuously bear the sunlight rays. we have a lot of methods which can minimize the heat which comes from the sun's rays.
If a place where summer causes greater thermal discomfort then the building as a whole should be oriented to intercept minimum solar radiation in summer and vice-versa. If the only summer has been considered that what about winter because it is not possible to increase the incident solar radiation on a surface during winter, therefore, it is always possible to reduce it in summer by the use of standing devices like landscape i.e., plants shade overhang, louvers, verandahs, etc. In the afternoon the air gets a higher temperature, therefore, the western wall needs special consideration like the use of different material ( which should not absorb more heat) or place such functional area which commonly may not be used during this period like law, stone, garage, etc. or even the forms itself may provide maximum shading on the various surface.
the surface of the building should be in such a way that it reflects the heat of mean radiant temperature.









Humidity:
The humidity of the atmosphere has an important role to increase or decrease the direct and mean radiation temperature on the building. since the human body also give up the humidity to the atmosphere, nearly 50 grams per hour in rest condition. if humidity is more in the atmosphere will create a more uncomfortable condition. in such conditions, humidity can be controlled only by the mechanical device.

Air movement:
Air movement is responsible to create comfortable for uncomfortable conditions for the men.
in the summer, air will help to reduce the temperature and provide fresh air to men. air movement does not allow the stagnation of uncomfortable air

Site conditions:
to understand the geographical condition and surroundings of the sire, the value of the latitude and position of the north is necessary. the surrounding may help in the case of mean radiation temperature and direction of air.
