Why fish plate is important in rail

  1. It is used in rail joints to maintain the continuity of the rail.
  2. It allows expansion and contraction of the rail which happens due to the temperature variations
  3. It holds the ends of the rail both laterally in line and vertically in level
  4. It is arranged as it bears the stress due to lateral and vertical bending moments without getting distorted
  5. It absorbs the shock caused by the jumping of the wheel over the expansion gap.
  6. It allows a free moment of rail for expansion and contraction so that the web of the rail can't touch each other
